Subject pronouns + s'appeler ("to be called")
In French, you don't just say your name — you say what you "call yourself"! The verb is s'appeler, and it changes its ending depending on who is talking: je m'appelle (my name is...), tu t'appelles (your name is...), il/elle s'appelle (his/her name is...). Notice the little word before the verb (m', t', s') — it always matches the person, so je goes with m'appelle and tu goes with t'appelles. You'll hear and use this every single time you meet someone new in French.
Je m'appelle Léa.
My name is Léa.
Tu t'appelles Sami ?
Is your name Sami?
Il s'appelle Thomas.
His name is Thomas.
Elle s'appelle Chloé.
Her name is Chloé.
French vs English
In English we just say "I am Léa" or "My name is Léa" — one simple phrase. In French, s'appeler literally means "to call oneself," so je m'appelle Léa really means "I call myself Léa," with an extra little word (m', t', s') built into the verb.
Watch out for
English speakers often forget the small word before the verb and just say "Je appelle Léa" instead of "Je m'appelle Léa" — that little m' (or t', or s') can't be left out, even though it feels easy to skip.
